Questions about first use or activation of the Carina™ Fully Implantable Hearing Device

What does “initial activation” really mean?

About six to eight weeks after surgery, you are ready to have your Carina Fully Implantable Hearing Device turned on for the first time. This involves returning to the hospital where you were implanted, or to a center working with that hospital, where a qualified dispensing professional programs your device.

Will I be able to use the telephone with the implant?

Most patients are able to use a telephone with their implant. Some find it works better by placing the loud-speaker part of the phone over the microphone implant area to use the implant to amplify the voice from the telephone. Results vary from patient to patient. Whether the voice from the telephone can be heard will depend on the degree of individual hearing loss.

Am I able to take a shower or swim with the implant?

Yes. Showering and swimming is ok. Diving to depths of 10m (30ft) is not recommended as it may damage the device.

Is it okay to use a hearing aid in the implanted ear with the Carina Fully Implantable Hearing Device?

No. There is no need to use both Carina Fully Implantable Hearing Device and a hearing aid on the same ear.

Will it take much time for me to get used to hearing with the Carina Fully Implantable Hearing Device?

There is always an adjustment period when fit with an amplification device for the first time or when you receive a new amplification device for the first time. The more the device is worn while you are awake, the quicker you become accustomed or adjusted to hearing new sounds.

What if the device breaks or is in need of repair?

If your device appears to be faulty you should contact the implant center. Your dispensing professional may ask you to return to the clinic for evaluation of the problem.

What if my hearing changes over time?

The Carina Fully Implantable Hearing Device is fully programmable and allows dispensing professionals to customize the amplification program to your unique hearing needs. The device can be easily programmed and re-programmed in the same manner as programmable hearing aids.
